Overcoming Anxiety & Choosing Honesty

Changing Tides

We have been absent for the past two weeks.

Or so it seems. Why? Basically, we’re getting our shit together and I’m doing my best not to crumble.

The month of February has been a bit of an overwhelming one. Our original plan when we left the US in October was to visit Bali and then move to Bangkok and get teaching jobs. We would settle in, save up, and visit as much of this side of the world as possible. After spending a month in Bangkok, we realized it wasn’t the right fit for right now. With no real backup plan other than to keep traveling, we moved to Taiwan. We’ve been rolling with the punches ever since.

Now, our 90 day Taiwan visa is coming to an end. We need to make some major decisions: either we move somewhere completely new or plan a trip out of the country and return.

Are you ready for your close-up? (Photo walk)

Hello,

I’d like to formally introduce myself. I’m the guy hugging things. Nice to meet you too.

As you might know, Jill and I have finally been able to catch our breaths from our travels. Being in the little-big city of Tainan for a month, it has been nice to just walk around and soak in everything.

One thing that has pleasantly surprised us is the beautiful flowers that surround the area. If the Olympics had gardening as a sport, Taiwan would be a serious contender.

So in the spirit of  Valentine’s Day and the misery that can be winter, we’ve picked a few of our favorite  flowers just for you!

How I Overcame Harassment in France

Guest Post by Shelly Enright

Voyaging to new lands is never easy.

When I first moved to the south of France, I had to get used to a lot of new things.

Between the customary cheek kisses upon greeting someone, buying a fresh baguette everyday, and having to find ways to pass the time until the drunk couple fighting in the street cools down so I can leave my apartment and go to class, the hardest thing to adjust to is what it’s like to walk down the street. Texture photo walk through Tainan

It’s refreshing to take a step back from the computer and just step outside. Sometimes the best inspiration comes in the simplest forms, like a dandelion growing out of a sidewalk crack. For me, this week, it was textures. Here’s what I found while walking near the Confucius Temple in Tainan this week.

Get inspired off the beaten path: a creative walk in Taipei

Is the dull rain of Taipei, Taiwan getting you down? Looking for some creative inspiration off the beaten path? Take a short  walk (even if it’s drizzling) through the Treasure Hill Artist Village: explore the modernly concrete alleyways, sketch the street bunny graffiti art, and create whimsical photo-op scenes in an open air room with human size fortune cookie sculptures. If you appreciate architecture and art, and like to explore without hundreds of tourists, then this is a quiet, interesting option to check out with a morning or afternoon in Taipei.
