Flower Fever

Boyish Chic Flower Fever | Road To Here Blog

I totally hippied out for the Kind Proposal film we shot last week. How could I not with these incredible, vibrant flowers?! Their liveliness just makes me break out into a smile, especially with sunflowers in the mix – my favorite flower alongside the poppy.

Sunflowers are just so dang happy with that bright yellow. Fun fact: sunflowers are called tournesol in French which, word for word, means turn toward the sun. How happy is that? They’re little reflections of the sun. These flowers are a perfect reminder on how to live each moment: like a mirror for the sun.

A Kind Proposal (film)

By Jillian

Giving sunflowers to the best mom in the world. Secretly dropping off cupcakes on a friend’s front porch. Handing out flowers to strangers. I can’t get enough of Love Day.

You see, I used to celebrate Valentine’s Day. But something was missing. I saw people around me giving to receive or, worse, expecting just to be given to. For a holiday based around love, I’m not sure I see the love in that.

For those that give with love as the core intention, you might notice the day comes and goes as fast as chocolate candies. The 14th is always packed with heart emoticons, red glitter, and smiles. We share meals with each other instead of with the tv and plan a girls night out that wouldn’t happen otherwise. It’s really quite beautiful.

But what about the 15th? The 16th? By this time, we’re sick of chewy caramel candy hearts and we just can’t seem to get rid of that damn glitter fast enough. Everyone’s back to the daily routine and we find ourselves focusing on the cold and the miserable.

What happened to the love?

Several years ago, I read Jerry Spinelli’s Stargirl. If you’re not familiar, it’s about a nonconformist teen who is committed to helping others through acts of kindness, such as giving notes with positive messages to strangers. Often times, she gives anonymously without expecting recognition for her generosity. Stargirl is truly a kind soul who emulates nothing short of love.

But Stargirl doesn’t just love on one day. She loves every day.

Today is a holiday surrounding love, which is why I’ve given it a new name: Love Day. I don’t need a Valentine to celebrate love. All I need is a little kindness.

With a nod to Stargirl, I’m dedicating this Love Day to a new beginning of spreading kindness to everyone in my life – from the barista at 7-11 who remembers my coffee order every afternoon to a man walking his dog next to me at the park. Even if it’s just with one flower.

Eric and I set out on our flower frenzy to brighten someone else’s day. And while I hope that we did that, as we were gleefully biking home I realized: my day was unexpectedly brightened in return.

Unexpected Pit Stops: Culture and Koi Fish in Tainan

Biking around Tainan City last week, we happily stumbled upon the colorful, historical Chihkan Tower. Also known as Fort Provintia, Chihkan Tower was once a Dutch outpost. Then, it was destroyed by an earthquake, leaving behind a ghostly glimpse of a staircase in a hidden underground room. This cultural monument has intruiging remnants of aboriginal times and is a worthy short afternoon stop (it’s also supposedly gorgeous at night).

Boyish Chic: Keeping it simple.

Style doesn’t need to be over the top or expensive to be stellar. Often times, the simpler the better (and the more comfortable – bonus!). Because it’s so hard to nail down just right, effortless style is quite unique and refreshing. Here’s some shots from an afternoon of toning it down and biking around in our basics…

New Boyish Chic challenge: How to make the most of a limited wardrobe

Thinking about ideas for Boyish Chic lately, I’ve realized it’s taken on a new spin: Eric and I have been faced with the challenge of looking stellar while living out of a backpack. Sometimes, it’s more difficult than it sounds (like when I get tired of the same things and start to miss the hell out of my closet back home). But, styling a limited wardrobe has also been a fun experiment in making the best out of what little we have and finding out how many different ways we can wear the same thing without looking like we don’t do laundry.

Boyish Chic in Tainan & A Call to Fellow Bloggers

Hello, 2014. Fresh start, new year, and plenty of time for… adventure time! I’m all in. I’m pretty psyched about this year and what’s happening with this blog. I’m really enjoying writing and photographing. I’m also hoping to do a site and logo re-design when my tablet finally comes in.

In the mean time, I’m calling out to my fellow bloggers about guest posts and to artisans or clothing companies. If you’re interested in submitting content for review on the blog, please email me at RoadToHereBlog@gmail.com with your ideas. If you’d like me to style and review a product for the Boyish Chic section (for Eric or me), also please email me! I’d love to talk to you about partnerships.

Enough serious talk, let’s get on with the Boyish Chic of the week:
